Inspirational Person: Fisayo Tuoyo

HEIGHT HAS NOTHING ON HER.... she still struts her stuff, do you dare? A while back friends and family used to encourage me to model. I would look at them with a "are you crazy kind of look". And they would say "why not?, you don't have to be tall". When people meet me for the first time, having seen my pictures, they are always suprise, they are always expecting me to be some 5'7-5'8 chick. I just smile and say i'm a cute petite chick oh, 5'2 to be exact, and I love it. However this young lady has proved me wrong, I took the opportunity to ask her a few questions and here's what the radiant Fisayo Tuoyo had to say......

Kaffy: "Sweetie how are you?"
Fisayo: "Hi Kaffy, I’m good thanks hun".

"How's the weather for you -Its been crazy cold as of late right?"
I know right especially that snow in February, thank God its getting a bit nice and sunny now.

"I saw you not too long ago, after a year in Southampton! let’s not even go through where we bumped into each other" (laughing)
(laughing she agrees) "Yes indeed the location of our surprise meeting was indeed one we definitely will both not be forgetting in a hurry! And I must add like I told you that day you really pulled off the casual yet effortlessly glam look. A personal favourite of mine (and she winks at me) and that lip gloss".

"My first question as always, what made you decide to model, how did it all start?"
I enjoy telling this story because of the randomness of it. It was the morning after a night out with my family friend and cousin in the summer of 2007, I guess I was just chilling around the house in some really casual clothes and my family friend was like: “Fissy you’ve got the physique of a model-I’m guessing she meant in regard to being slim not height unfortunately. you LOVE to pose and besides that you are very photogenic.

(she laughs) so to humour ourselves we got on the net later that evening and started checking round just for laughs-I think we literally just goggled “modelling” imagine!!! and that was it, actually it was just the beginning as I would later discover…Basically the long and short of the story is what started off as a joke became a reality and I’ve not looked back since then".

"Personally I wouldn't/couldnt model, my height puts me off, what encouraged you to keep going?"
Honestly?... Sheer will power. If you don’t have a strong mind, this is not the world you want to step into. Your height can either be your disadvantage or your most powerful tool ever -Eva Pigford cycle 3 America’s next top model. Personally being the eternal optimist I am, even though I knew my height would be regarded as a disadvantage, I always thought to myself “What are 6 inch heels for?” still we all know a much taller girl will obviously be booked for a job than a shorter model. It takes persistence and courage and a “YES I CAN ATTITUDE” no matter what.

"How tall are you?"
Without my super duper heels I’m about 5’6

"How exciting do you find what you do?"
Oh extremely exciting. Let the apparent excitement not fool you though, it’s not as easy as it looks. Confidence and attitude is the key in pulling all this off.

"You do shows, events, and photoshoots, what goes through your head at these sessions?"
Especially in catwalk shows, the adrenaline rush just before I get on the catwalk, and the sudden boldness I feel when I’m on there knowing I am not only about to “wow the audience” with the clothes I have on, the walk, the pose, but convincing them these clothes will look even more fabulous on them just by seeing it on me. The "icing on top of the cake" personally is posing at the end of the runway while the photographers snap away madly is another exciting rush. For photo shoots it’s another story. The pose, facial expression, body alignment and what the photographer is trying to achieve with the shot are the main most important things going through my head. The most important thing is not to over think it, relax, pose and get those perfect shots. I also can’t wait to see what the images come out looking like.

"You have featured in a few magazines; do you feel like you have made yourself known?"
Yes most definitely, compared to when I first started out. I was actually pretty lucky; the first thing I ever did in regards to modelling was to be featured in an online magazine. But unless you’re Beyonce or Michael Jackson, you can never really have enough publicity, (she laughs)

"Apart from modelling what else do you?"
I work as a student ambassador in my university and I also work with the London Engineering project in conjunction with the small piece trust as a student ambassador, I’m on a student associate scheme which enables me to work in a school for 15 days, giving me the opportunity to see if I may want to be a teacher in the late late late future (laughs). So it’s all very busy and hectic in addition to my final year project and upcoming finals. All these are part time and very flexible so rest assured they don’t interfere with my Uni work.

"You are in your final year at university right? Which one and what are you studying, and how's that going?"
Yes indeed I am thank God. I’m currently in London South Bank University studying for a BENG in Petroleum Engineering. ( laughing i ask beng?)

"How do you juggle both?"
If there is any thing I’ve learnt outside lectures, it has to be the art of time management. I’ve always been honest with the people I’ve worked with so far in the modelling industry and always made it clear that I am a student and my studies are my priority. Basically it’s been as simple as going for castings which are in the evenings, on my days off uni, weekends or negotiating something with whoever I am working with to make sure the two don’t clash at all.

"Any words of advice for any one wishing to model or get into fashion industry?"
Firstly, carry out some proper research before you even think of taking any type of pictures and also when looking for an agency. You will not believe the numbers of scam agencies there are out there taking advantages of naive and sadly desperate girls out there.

Do NOT be afraid to ask a question if your gut instincts tell you something doesn’t sound or look right or you are simply not sure or even clueless. DO follow advice given especially when you start initially, even after you’ve been modelling for a while. They are called pros or experts for a reason. Don’t be afraid to come out of your comfort zone and be a bit more edgy with your look, pictures, style etc. There’s always that something that makes you stand out. I’ve been told time without number it’s my face that is my strongest feature and I use this to my advantage when taking pictures.

Please please!!! Don’t even bother approaching top well known high fashion agencies if you are not 5’8 tall minimum for girls and 6’0 for guys. This height restriction is very very strict for professional high fashion catwalk models. There is a lot of work available for shorter people don’t worry. It depends on what they are looking for, so always have your fingers crossed and be prepared to bring it 1000 times better than anybody else, Tall, short, petite, plus size, etc.
Lastly be yourself at all times, and NEVER EVER let anybody put you down or tell you you absolutely cannot do something. Not everybody will like you, in fact, some people may just not like you for no apparent reason at all but hey, it’s their problem not yours! look at me I’m only 5’6 and I’m modelling! And I’ve been on the catwalk!

"Oh so I can still even Model?"- I say winking at her (she laughs and says yes of course)

"And my final question (laughing) I see you are quite the party animal?! Lol, you do enjoy a night out with the girls don't you?"
I wouldn’t call myself a “party animal” but I’m not going to lie I do enjoy myself occasionally and when I do, lets just say, I make the most of it most definitely Miss K! When it comes to that I’m guided by two mottos: "All work and no play make Fissy a very dull and slightly grumpy-girl".

"Work hard, play harder!"- in reference to question 9, I think I’ve earned and deserve it…
(laughing)you only live once. Enjoy it while you can (she smiles)

"Don't mind me just teasing (laughing) I have seen pictures all over Facebook".
Ah good old face book, very deceiving when it comes to that especially the mini feed, this person has been tagged here, said that, done this…(she laughs loudly) It over emphasises some things doesn’t it?

(we both laugh agreeing)
